Food For Thought

‘God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know
One from the other.”

In 1995, George was asked if the Langley Help Network would take over operation of the Aldergrove Food Bank. At that time, George asked Langley Food Bank volunteers Willy and Darlene, as well as John and Pamela if they would consider taking responsibility of overseeing the distribution in Aldergrove. They agreed.

Darlene is still serving as the supervisor there and readily remembers the day when George approached her with this task. Her first response was excitement immediately followed by doubt. As she sought God and His plan she was given many scriptures. (Matt 6: 9-11, Matt 6:25-34, John 6: 35-40, Romans 10: 13-14). She was convinced that God's heart is to care for the poor and downtrodden as well as be with her as she served.

Darlene has seen God's faithfulness from the first day she took on responsibility because God has supplied abundantly. To this day, the AFB has an abundance of food. "He [God] has sent wonderful workers to love and support me as well as care for the clients."

Aldergrove Food Bank

Currently, the AFB is located at the Aldergrove United Church and is open for grocery distribution the first four Tuesdays of each month from 11:30-2pm. Its operation and layout are similar to the Langley Food Bank. However, when compared to Langley community, Aldergrove is much smaller and consequently distributes fewer groceries. There are about 110 registered families and on average the AFB distributes 60 hampers a week.

Although the facilities at the Aldergrove United Church do not include a cafeteria, the AFB still serves about 40 bowls of soup to clients each week from a steam table and, on occasion, from an arsenal of crock pots!

The AFB is entirely staffed by volunteers, with approximately 5-7 volunteers helping with grocery distribution each week.
