Food For Thought

It's hard to feel aimless when you see God at work through what you're doing.

Bob Moeller

Comments from former volunteers

I was so thankful to have a place to go and help my community in such a practical way. It kept me … human (?). It kept me grounded, and helped me re-focus on the important things in life.

Well run; great leadership.

Everyday was exciting, fun and enjoyable, no matter how tiring it was at times.

Working at the food bank has given me a greater appreciation for people of all social status—everyone has something to share/offer.

I felt God was teaching me many lessons as I did what little I felt I could do.

The people who work at the Langley Food Bank were so friendly and nice from the first day. I felt like the staff treated me as family.

I don’t recall a time that was not enjoyable, there were days when the clients could present certain challenges, but I always felt supported by the staff.

I know that I personally benefited because of the things that I learned each day that I came in. God taught me new things, either about different people, or about myself. I knew that even though I didn’t always “feel like” coming in, God had something new to teach me that day.

I grew spiritually because I learned about prayer—watching George & others rely totally on God’s providence, I learned about the strength of the human character, through God’s grace, I learned about judgment (mine and other’s perception of the less fortunate) and I learned about love – God’s love for all people, through the people at the food bank – both volunteers and clients.

I think it was a wonderful place to spend my Wednesdays and although there may be many small ways to improve, I see this as a great place to be, both for volunteers and for the people they serve.

I thought I could bless others, but the reverse was actually true.

I saw so many different needs being met through the power of prayer.

Working alongside and observing the staff at the food bank taught me about serving God with deep commitment and complete trust. I was so inspired to see these ideals lived out in a realistic manner.

It certainly confirmed in me that it is possible to trust in the Lord’s provision in all things. It also encouraged me to be generous to the Lord with my life (skills, etc.) and watch, in turn, how He is so generous with us.

For me, the striking thing about the food bank is that it is extremely well organized and efficiently run, and yet it is not overly controlled by man, but rather God clearly has the lead.

Thank you for letting me help out a little!

The Langley Help Network depends entirely on volunteers for the day to day operation of its distribution programs. Although we have several paid staff, without our amazing team of wonderful volunteers none of our programs could function. At any one time, we have anywhere from 30 to 60 or more volunteers involved with the Langley Help Network. Some volunteer for up to 3 full days a week while others as little as ½ a day every 2 weeks and still others are available on an on-call basis and may serve only occasionally as the need arises and coincides with their availability.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds, but the one common thread throughout our volunteer team is a living faith in Jesus Christ, involvement with a local Christian church and a desire to express that faith through practical application by serving those in need in our community.

Here are a few profiles of volunteers currently serving with us.

Alaine
Alaine
Bartsch

Alaine has been involved with the Langley Food Bank, since we were located on Logan Ave. many years ago. She started volunteering because she heard George (in a church service one day) say that he couldn’t do it alone.

Alaine has been married for 21 years and has two teenagers who love to come and help when they can. She says she likes to serve in the cafeteria because she likes to serve food and host people. Clients are happy when they are fed a good meal.

Alaine is a bookkeeper for various companies. At tax time she usually needs to take a month away from the food bank to keep up with her work.

Alaine graciously says her favorite part of the week is when she volunteers here; and we are all blessed because she chooses to volunteer here.

Sharon Schacter
Sharon
Schacter

Sharon Schacter has been volunteering at the Langley Food Bank for approximately a year along with her husband Joel. She loves to snow ski, do fitness, calligraphy & walk her dog. She also enjoys wall and furniture stenciling.

Sharon is 51 years old and became a Christian in 1986 and goes to Jericho Ridge Community Church. She and her husband have volunteered in the Alpha program.

Sharon and Joel have two adult sons Ryan & Tyler. Sharon has worked in insurance, travel, fitness and now in real estate with her husband and son.

Sharon has a wining smile, a great attitude, and a love for the clients at the food bank. She is much loved and appreciated.

Joel Schacter

Joel also has been volunteering with us for approximately a year. He was involved with the Alpha ministry for many years.

Joel is 53 years old and came from a Jewish background being raised in the Jewish community of Montreal. His family moved to BC in 1970 where he eventually met and married Sharon. They have been married 32 years and have two sons; Tyler who is 25 and works with them in real estate, and Ryan who is a “3d” animator in Vancouver. They both moved out last year so Joel and Sharon are now empty nesters.

Joel has worked as a realtor for almost 26 years and is currently with Re/max Treeland Realty. He says the Lord has blessed them with many good friends and clients, good health and has met all their financial need and many of their wants too!

Joel became a “born again” Christian in the early 1980’s and is involved with the Langley Leadership Prayer Breakfast Committee, the Full Gospel Business Men’s International weekly luncheon, men’s group at his church, and his own small men’s group meeting every Wednesday morning at his office, and now volunteers with us at the Langley Food Bank Friday mornings. He says he looks forward to see how God will use him each time he comes and enjoys the relationships he has developed with several of the clients as well as the co-volunteers. He says he continues to be amazed at how the Lord provides and blesses this ministry.

Joel has a wonderful heart and love for the Lord and he shares that with our clients and co-workers. We are honored to have him with us.

Marilynn
Mincey

Marilynn started volunteering with the Langley Help Network about three years ago. A friend from her church suggested that she should come with her and try volunteering which was something she wanted to do anyway.

Marilynn is an Anglican and a Third Order Franciscan. Service is a large part of her Personal Rule of Life. She has promised to serve Christ as a Franciscan for the rest of her life.

She is 67 years old, a retired teacher, married for 47 years. They have two children who are grown and married and three grandchildren.

Marilynn is an International All Breed Dog Judge having been a successful dog breeder for 35 years. She is a member of the Canadian Kennel Club and licensed to judge dogs through that organization. Her hobbies include travel, reading, gardening and spending quality time with her grandchildren.

Marilynn says her spiritual life is most important to her. She is an active member of St. George’s Parish in Fort Langley. She is part of the Liturgical Planning Team, and a Server at the Altar every Sunday. She is also enrolled in Education for Ministry, which is a four year course of Christian Education.

Marilynn says that each day at the Food Bank Christ walks in and renews her soul. The Spirit of the Living God is very evident here. We are the arms and hands and feet of our Lord as we serve in His name.

Marilynn is a friendly, vibrant, dedicated volunteer.

Maury
Maury
Jacob

Maury started volunteering with us February 14, 2007. Maury and his wife dropped off some clothes around Christmas last year and he was impressed with what he saw. He realized there was something special about this place and had been looking for a way to return his good fortune to the community.

Maury is 69 years old, married to Mary for 43 years. They have five children and 12 grandchildren.

Maury taught for 35 years in both elementary and high school and been a principal for 18 years. He retired 11 years ago. He presently works 2–3 months each year for Kwantlen University College as a Practicum Advisor for the Special Teaching Assistant Programme.

Maury and his family have been active members in several Catholic Parishes, and are presently members of Saint Nicholas Parish in Walnut Grove. This has been key to strengthening their faith and family.
Maury and his family have a Fifth Wheel trailer and have done extensive trips to the East Coast, California and Mexico.

Maury says he is thankful for the opportunity to be God’s hands and to help do His work.
We are thankful for the talents and heart that Maury brings.
